Why using lawn feed is important

Why using lawn feed is important
Your garden grass needs the correct balance of nutrients to help it maintain its durability, health and lush, green looks. So, using lawn feed is essential to keep your garden topped up with the lawn feed goodness it needs!

How does using lawn feed help?

Our lawn feed is specially formulated to give your grass what it needs to grow better. Using quality lawn fertiliser will keep your lawn green and lush while significantly improving how well it grows. On top of this, lawn fertiliser helps prevent the growth of moss and weeds, defends against common lawn diseases and improves your grass’ recovery from wear and tear.

Lawn feed saves you time and money

Using lawn feed makes your grass healthier, so you won’t need to carry out lawn maintenance as often. Having healthier grass saves you time since it reduces the likelihood of weeds and moss growing, and you won’t need to buy as much grass seed when it comes to overseeding your lawn.

So, when should you use lawn feed?

To ensure your lawn grows as best it can, you should fertilise it at least twice a year. The first required feed of the year is in spring/early summer, giving your lawn a lift of growth after winter. The second recommended feed is in autumn/winter and prepares your lawn for the colder seasons. Finally, an optional feed in the middle of summer will boost its colour and health during the warmer months to help it recover from family gatherings, garden parties and holiday-time activities.

Spring/Summer feed – Required

Feeding your lawn in March/April is ideal once the temperatures have reached 8-10 degrees and above. This is when the grass on your lawn begins growing again after winter, and the added nutrients that a fertiliser provides will kickstart the year and ensure stronger growth for the busy months that follow.

Mid-Summer – Optional

This feed gives the best results when used around July to improve the colour and recovery of your lawn during these busier and warmer months. A quick-release fertiliser is ideal for giving your grass a 4-6 week boost to get it green and lush again!

Autumn/Winter feed  - Required

Applying this lawn feed during September/October when the weather turns from summer to autumn is ideal. However, you want to ensure this is done before colder November frosts are on the weather forecast.

What lawn feed to choose

Different lawn feeds will benefit your grass’ health and growth but differ in terms of their NPK nutrient balance, how fast-acting or long-lasting they are and how you apply them.We have split our fertiliser range into a few main categories to make choosing your lawn feed easier.
  • Our slow release fertilisers provide the longest-lasting coverage and benefit, offering 12-16 weeks of coverage to feed your lawn over a long period of time.
  • Quick release fertilisers, on the other hand, are great for providing a quick boost to lift the appearance, greenness and health of your lawn. Slow-release fertilisers are generally the better option, but sometimes your lawn will need a faster feed, which is where quick-release fertilisers excel.

4-in-1 Lawn Repair Fertiliser

  • Feed, Weed and Mosskiller is ideal for use on a fully established lawn (6 months+ since your seeds were sown). This lawn fertiliser carries out four jobs in one by feeding your lawn and making it green while also tackling weeds and moss. We recommend that this fertiliser is used across the entire lawn instead of only on damaged areas of grass.

What’s the best way to use lawn feed?

Following the seven simple steps outlined below will make it easy for your grass to thrive so you quickly have the lawn you’ve always wanted.
  1. Ensure you have done all the necessary maintenance to your lawn, such as scarifying and weed removal, before going any further
  2. If your soil is very dry before you add lawn feed, you should aerate and water your soil (if you haven’t already).
  3. Mow your lawn 3-4 days before applying the fertiliser.
  4. Apply the fertiliser at the suggested spreading rate by hand or using a spreader – aim to apply the lawn feed on an overcast day or in the evening.
  5. It is really important to water off the fertiliser from the grass blades as the fertiliser will burn and damage the existing grass.
  6. Our time-saving tip is to apply granular lawn feed when you expect a good amount of rainfall. This means nature will do much of the work for you; otherwise, you can just water it off using a hose or sprinkler system.
  7. You should also continue to water the granules until they have all dissolved completely, ensuring your lawn gets the best treatment from our fertiliser.
A friendly reminder is to wait 48 hours after applying fertiliser before using your lawn again. This will ensure your grass gets the nutrients it needs. We also recommend you keep kids and pets away during this time to allow your lawn to absorb the undisturbed nutrients. If you have any questions regarding our fertilisers or would like some advice on issues that you feel are unique to your garden, please drop us a message, and we will get back to you quickly.
