Product Description carrat-down

ECO: Clover Lawn is an expertly blended lawn seed mixture that will create a beautiful look for your lawn and significantly benefit nature.

Due to the fescue grass species and the stolon root (deep root) system of the clover in this mix, ECO: Clover Lawn creates a drought-tolerant garden lawn that stays green all year round - even in the frosty winters and intense summer heat! In addition, the clover in this low-maintenance mix acts as a natural fertiliser, meaning it is self-feeding and requires little additional aftercare. When the clover blooms, it will also attract bees and other pollinating insects to your garden, creating a habitat for local wildlife.

Our ECO: Clover Lawn mixture is made up of 45% perennial ryegrass for hardiness, 45% ryegrass to give your lawn a lush finish, and 5% clover. While 5% of clover may seem like a small amount of the mixture, our experts have found that this was the best amount of clover to work with the other grasses in the mix. Clover is a very small seed, so 5% is a lot in comparison to the grass seed!

Key Benefits:

  • Low maintenance, low cost
  • Introduces more biodiversity for local wildlife
  • Less frequent mowing required
  • Clover naturally 'fixes' the nitrogen balance in your garden soil
  • Eco friendly
  • Drought tolerant
  • Sweet-smelling clover flowers bloom from June – September

Our grass seed is tested to ensure it offers the highest purity levels and excellent germination rates. And all our seeds are covered by our Grass Seed Growth Guarantee.

Product Questions

Hi, I’d be grateful if you could advise on seed for two areas of my garden:
1) front garden, sunny. Have wildlife garden with pond, lots of frogs & toads, wildflowers. There is a pathway of grass, but due to not wanting to affect wildlife I haven’t cut the grass & this has resulted in it being about 30cm tall, only it’s laying flat, green on the tips but brown underneath!
I would like grass/clover or another covering useful for a low lying area to walk on, if possible beneficial to wildlife, drought tolerant to fit in with climate change, and will rarely need to be cut! I know I’m asking a lot.
Would the grass seed in this eco clover mix be a low height grass mix? How tall would the grass grow?
Would I be better off removing all current grass, or seeding this mix in the current grass? Wondering if this mix would gradually take over the current grass which perhaps grows longer?

2) Very steep area of the garden with no sun until 2pm as overshadowed by neighbouring large tree. Lots of sycamore leaves fall. I’d like a ground-cover between plants that can be walked on occasionally. Something low maintenance. Having cleared all unwanted things to get ready to start the clearing of leaves as they fall, there’s only soil between plants.
Due to the steepness, I want something that is useful to wildlife but also something that is low maintenance.
What percentage of flowers would you expect in this eco clover lawn? Just a bit concerned as there’s only 5% micro clover seed.
Does the clover die back in the winter?
Will you stock any other suitable seed?
Many thanks for your help.

Thank you for your question and hopefully we can help with a few recommendations.

If you do want something that will blend nicely with the existing natural growth, is hard wearing and will tolerate drought (due to the fescues in the mix), then ECO: Clover is perfect. There is some Perennial Ryegrass in the mix so it will establish quite quickly. You can either overseed the area or clear it but if you do want to overseed and heavily scarify prior to sowing, the ECO clover should take quite nicely. Clover is quick to spread and whilst it may not seem like a lot at first, you can expect the clover coverage to increase over time as it establishes itself in the lawn. Clover also dies back or becomes dormant so to speak during the winter but the grasses will remain all year. The mix is to ensure that the lawn maintains its "greenness" all year round. For the steep area - Whilst the ECO: Clover mix does have some shade tolerance, if this areas has little to no access to sunlight then I would recommend one of our Shaded mixes.

We’ve used the clover lawn seed now and had fantastic results this summer. Our lawn looks and feels the best it has been. There is clover evenly distributed through the lawn after the over-seeding. My questions are:
1 - does the clover stay green through winter (we’re in Scotland)?
2 - if it doesn’t, will it grow back or will we have to over-seed again in spring?
Thanks
Question by: Paul on 18 Sept 2023, 07:30
Thank you for your question.

1.Clover will become dormant during winter. This is why we have included the grass varieties - to ensure that the lawns remain green all year,
2.Clover is a very persistent perennial and will return each year and over time, you can expect to see more of it as it gradually spreads through the lawn.

What type of soil is this suitable for? Is it shade tolerant?
Question by: Sam on 8 Mar 2023, 12:17
Hi, thank you for your question. Our ECO Clover Lawn is suitable for most soil types, including poorer soils and compacted soils. It does have some shade tolerance and will cope well in dappled shade.

Hi there,

Is this seed strong enough to cope with dog urine?
Question by: Sarah on 22 Mar 2023, 19:10
Thank you for your question; whilst this is a hardy mix and is pretty self-sufficient, unfortunately, no grass seed is immune to the effects of dog urine.

What time of the year is best for overseeding?
Question by: Cath on 23 Mar 2023, 07:54
Thank you for your question.

The grass sowing season is generally from March - September. You can confidently sow grass seed when temperatures are 8-10 degrees and above consistently for at least two weeks with no adverse weather conditions forecast. Always consult a two week forecast prior to sowing.

Will a Clover lawn be more resistant to Schafer grub infestation? We will have to reseed a large lawn this year that has been destroyed by these grubs. This is our second infestation, previously a less severe attack 3 years ago.
Question by: Ailie on 25 Mar 2023, 07:38
Hi, thank you for your question. This is hard to say as most grasses will succumb to the damage eventually. However, the ECO: Clover Lawn is definitely a hardy mix and will not suffer as greatly or as quickly as some other grass varieties.
Answer by: Roisin McCann (Admin) on 27 Mar 2023, 10:45
I live on heavy clay soil. My poor lawn has really suffered this winter and is now just mud. It doesn’t get full sun over Winter. Would this mix be worth a try?
Question by: Jenny Davies on 31 Mar 2023, 10:37
Hi, thank you for your question. Our ECO Clover Lawn is a hardy mix suitable for most soil types, including clay. It also has some shade tolerance and will cope well in dappled shade, so it is definitely worth a try!

One area I want to apply the seed mix is very shady will it cope
Question by: Steve on 31 Mar 2023, 14:51
Hi, Thank you for your question. Our ECO Clover Lawn does have some shade tolerance and will cope well in dappled shade. If your lawn is in permanent shade, I'd recommend going for our STEADFAST Ultra Shade instead.

Should I use weed killer on my existing lawn before I overseed?
Question by: Elizabeth Jameson on 4 Apr 2023, 17:55
Hi, thank you for your enquiry.

If your lawn does have weeds then yes, we would recommend treating and removing these prior to sowing. Our Feed, Weed and Moss Killer product works over the course of two weeks to eradicate weeds and moss - where it is particularly prevalent patches will appear and these will need seeded. It will also feed your lawn and make any existing grass very green and lush. It is a granular fertiliser and needs to be watered in after application.

If there is anything else I can help with please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Question by: Natalie Curtis on 29 Jun 2023, 09:27
