SUPERSTAR: Back Lawn - All Questions

sort-ascending
Have i sowed the seeds too late?
I put the seed down about a week or so ago and have been watering it frequently.
I am concerned that the hot weather we have had for the last week has had an impact on the seeds not germinating as can’t see any evidence of growth.
Have I put the seed down too late in the year?
Has the long hot days killed the seed?
What can I do to fix patchy lawn?
Thanks
Ian

Hi Ian

There is no need to be concerned, the grass sowing season is generally from March - September. If you only seeded a week ago, then it is still quite early and there is plenty of time for the grass to grow. As long as you keep the area well watered and there is ample sunlight then there should be no issues. Just remember to water in the evenings when temperatures are cooler.

Hello what type of ryegrass is in the back lawn seed? Is it a turf or fine ryegrass?
Question by: Ray on 26 Jul 2021, 16:40
Our Superstar: Back Lawn seed is 80% perennial ryegrass and 20% fescue.

Can I just throw the seed onto an existing lawn and will it germinate like that please?
Question by: Ruth Bethany on 18 Aug 2021, 13:37
Hi Ruth, thank you for your question. There is some degree of preparation before sowing seeds. Below is our step by step guide on how to over seed an existing lawn.

● Remove any dead grass, weeds or moss by scarifying / raking the area
● Rake the area enough so that the soil is loose and not compact
● Sow the seed at our recommended rate of 35g per m2, by using a seed spreader or your hand
● Rake the seed in after sowing so that the seed is in amongst the soil
● Firm down by foot or by using a roller to improve seed to soil contact
● Water the just-sown seed well

Hi just bought grass seed how long does it last unused in bag please thanks
Question by: Cheryl rushforth on 26 Aug 2021, 13:05
Hi, our seed is all fresh so will be good for about 12 months, likely 18 in reality but the less time that passes the better!
Store it in a cool, dry place and away from pests and it will be fine.

Is it worth seeding a new lawn when there are several large established ants nests. If not, how do I get rid of the nests please?

Hi,

I've completely reseeded my lawn 3 weeks ago. I've had quite alot of growth (grass is about 2 inches now), however there are quite alot of bare patches where the grass is more sparse.

Is it worth sewing more seed now or do I need to give it more time?

P.s. I also put down your pre seed fertiliser aswell.

Thanks
Question by: Daniel on 16 Oct 2021, 07:23
Hi, it is possible that those sparser areas will still germinate. This is a mix of perennial ryegrass and fescues, ryegrass will establish quite quickly whilst fescues are slightly slower to establish. Also, due to the time of year growing is slower than in summer months. I would recommend waiting another few weeks before overseeding. If after this time there is till no improvement then you might want to consider overseeding.

Hi I have 20 acres of rye grass down two years ago. It needs more volume to make hay and needs meadow fescues and other grass overspend. Any recommendations, price sowing methods etc
Question by: John rudd on 1 Nov 2021, 08:25
Hi, we do have a mix that is a 100% perennial ryegrass mix, PERFORM: Sports or alternatively the SUPERSTAR: Back Lawn is an 80% mix. For overseeding 20 acres you would require 2023.43kg. You will find our overseeding procedure in our Help & Advice section

hi, i sowed a new lawn late september, everything was growing well but then gradually most parts of the new lawn have seemed to have died off. do you think that it will come back to life in the spring or do you think that i will have to seed it again. many thanks
Question by: bobbie richards on 8 Feb 2022, 13:53
Hi, thank you for your question. It is too early to tell, as it was a new sward it may not have been strong enough to deal with winter conditions. You might want to consider Spring/Summer Fertiliser in March to help the lawn recover, this is a nitrogen rich feed and once dissolved will nourish the lawn for up to 16 weeks. This will also help strengthen and thicken up the grass, making it very green and lush. It can also be applied to new lawns once established to help strengthen new seedlings. This is a granular product and will need watered until fully dissolved.

Our lawn suffers from a pair of very active spaniels and right now after winter it looks bad. We are in central Scotland so get cool winters with periods of ice and snow. Nov - Feb it gets little direct sunlight but now it is getting plenty and by mid summer it gets full sun most all day. What should I be reseeding with?
Question by: Alistair Barron on 8 Mar 2022, 16:04
HI there, you could go for our All Rounder mix which is our hardest wearing mixture and would help to withstand the effects of your dogs on the grass. It is a 50:50 blend of perennial ryegrass and fescue (35% strong creeping red fescue, 15% chewings fescue). Fescues are well known for their ability to thrive in tough conditions such as drought, clay and sandy soils, and the perennial ryegrass in the mix makes it hard-wearing.
