Another one please!
Do any of the plants flower in the winter months?
If not will the area planted look a bit drab and need to be brightened up somehow?

Thank you

Question by: Clive Watson on 8 Oct 2020, 20:51
Hi Clive

If sown now nothing will bloom until Spring.

Thanks
Roisin

Hi, what height do the wildflowers generally grow to?
Question by: Andrew Taylor on 12 Oct 2020, 10:43
Hi Andrew

Thank you for your enquiry. Whilst our mixes contain a variety of wildflowers it would be difficult to estimate a height. Some of the wildflowers within the mixes have been known to grow quite tall if sown in very fertile conditions

If I sow Meadow Magic in the winter (Nov) will they bloom the following Spring?
Question by: Corinne on 26 Oct 2020, 09:39
Hi Corinne

There are two times in the year that we recommend sowing a meadow, one is spring and the other is autumn. Autumn is an ideal time because the seeds need to undergo the process of stratification (a freeze) to kick start their germination. If you were to sow the seed now, nothing will happen until next spring, early in the season. If you decide to wait until next year and sow in the spring then your meadow will flower in the summer.

We do have a few blog posts on our website that go into more details. I have copied the links below if you wish to read further.

Does the meadow magic contain grass seed ..also can it be direct drilled?
Question by: Gary hignett on 16 Apr 2021, 13:07
Hi Gary, no there are no grass varieties in this particular mix and it is 100% wildflower. If the area has been prepared then you can sow the seed. It drilling then just be careful of depth, it can effect germination for some varieties if sown too deep.

I have an area that is approx 96m2 that is mostly in direct sunlight around half the day. It is beside a tall conifer that shades it from the late afternoon onwards. Would meadow magic seeds be ok here or would I need the seeds for a shaded area?
Question by: carol abrehart on 11 Jun 2021, 10:09
Hi Carol, for areas that do experience shade throughout the day we would normally recommend Shaded Area Wildflowers. This mix consists of annual and perennial wildflowers and grasses that will tolerate damp and shaded areas.

What time of year should I sow? Thanks
Question by: Sara Smith on 8 Jul 2021, 16:01
Autumn and spring are great times to sow wildflower seed. Annuals will appear 60-80 days after sowing, perennials will have a small showing but will take up to one year to fully establish. If you sow in Autumn, you should expect a showing in early spring and if sowing in spring you should see blooms in summer.

I'm about to sow. Should I worry about wood pigeons eating the seed? And looking forward to next year flowering, are deer partial to the flowers??
Question by: Ruth Borthwick on 22 Oct 2021, 16:16
Hi, if you are concerned about birds then there are certain measures you can take to help deter them. You can cover the area with a netting, or hang old cds from sticks throughout the area, strange but it does work, Also a friendly option is hanging a bird feeder in another part of the garden to help keep them distracted.

I planted the meadow mix in October . It started flowering maytime and looked fab. Looks a bit tired now , do I need to keep watering in the dry weather, and when is the best time to cutback.
Question by: Steve nield on 5 Jul 2022, 21:43
Hi Steve, thank you for your question. In August/September of the first year, you have sown your wildflower seed, and cut your wildflower sward to 7cm after flowering – you can do this by putting your mower on a high setting.

In most cases, remove clippings - if you have annual wildflowers in your mix and do not wish them to return the following year, remove them. But if you want your wildflowers to return the following year - let them go to seed head, and manually assist their self-seeding by firming the seed heads into the soil. By doing this, your annuals will return the following year.

I recommend watering the wildflower area if you are not experiencing any rainfall.
