There are normally two occasions in which you will need to know how much grass seed to sow:

  1. If you’re creating a new lawn
  2. If you’re overseeding an old one

By the end of this blog, you’ll know the answer, and if someone ever happens to ask you, you’ll be able to tell them too!To find out how much seed you require – you’ll need to measure your lawn. You can find our guide on how to measure your lawn here.

Creating a new lawn

Our recommended sowing rate is 50g per m2 for a new lawn – this will ensure an even spread of seed when sowing, and will help you control how much to use, so you don’t overcrowd your soil. If you apply this logic to our available quantities of seed, you’ll be able to determine how much you need to buy to create your new lawn correctly.

For example; If your lawn is 15m x 10m:

  • 15m x 10m = 150m2
  • 150 x 0.050 = 7.5KG

If you’re still unsure – you can use our extremely handy Grass Seed Calculator (even we use it sometimes!)

At a glance coverage guide for 50g per m2:

  • 2KG will cover 40 m2
  • 10KG will cover 200 m2
  • 20KG covers 400 m2

Overseeding an old lawn

Our recommended sowing rate for overseeding is 35g per m2 – as you’ll know, there will already be existing grass seed in your lawn, which will need to integrate with your new seed. Sowing a little bit less of your new seed allows both new and old to work it out amongst themselves. This will also help improve seed-to-soil contact.

For example; If your lawn is 15m x 15m:

  • 15m x 15m = 225m2
  • 225 x 0.035 = 7.88KG

At a glance coverage guide for 35g per m2:

  • 2KG will cover 57m2
  • 10KG will cover 285m2
  • 20KG will cover 570m2

Now you know how much seed to sow, go and spread the word!
